Commenting on the narrow defeat at Newton Aycliffe, manager Andy Gowens felt that after a poor first half Whitley eventually did enough to deserve a point from the game. “It was a poor start again, we gave away a goal after just two minutes. I thought we were disappointing in the first half, we gave the ball away too much and when we’ve won it back we gave it away straightaway. They were very much on top for quite a lot of the first half. We huffed and puffed and stuttered a little bit, with a couple of little flashes of good play but not enough.
The second half was totally different I thought. I had a bit of go at them at half time and it was a totally different ball game. We controlled the ball, retained it well, we got forward and had a couple of great chances, Peter had a couple and then David with a half chance. When teams are going well and full of confidence, those sorts of chances go in but when you’re not, they don’t. In the end I thought it was cruel, we deserved something out of the game, as we have with the last few.
So overall, disappointing, we should have got something out of the game but we haven’t.”
