1966 Leyton v Whitley Bay

12/02/1966: Leyton  0  Whitley Bay  5

FA Amateur Cup 3rd Round

Whitley Bay travelled to London for their vital Amateur Cup clash against the strong Leyton side. Top of the Athenian League, and without conceding a home goal in three months, the Southern team were full of confidence.

Within minutes of the kick-off the Bay were a goal up from Elliot, who had had a poor night’s rest after he had accidently jammed his hand in a railway carriage door. Lamb crossed the ball and Elliot brilliantly headed it home, being parallel to the ground as he connected.

Then Wright picked up a loose ball and dummied around the centre-half before crashing it passed Lindsay for the second goal. It was all Whitley Bay, and their forwards buzzed through the Leyton defence with amazing regularity.

However, midway through the half, Collett rounded Goundry and pushed the ball towards the empty net only to see Oakley dash back and clear it off the line. Half-time : 0-2.

Immediately after the restart Whitley Bay surged into attack and within four minutes were three up. Elliot beat the back for the umpteenth time and as he was about to shoot he was pulled back by the shirt. The referee had no hesitation. Knox banged the penalty into the net.

Then Lamb, shining on the other wing, cut inside from the wing and beautifully chipped the ball over the keeper’s head, to see Adams punch it over the bar. Knox slammed the penalty into the same place as before, the top left hand corner of the net. 0-4.

Leyton had never been in the game and the London crowd were witnessing the Bay at their best.

As the final whistle was about to blow Wright scored, after Wilkinson had headed the ball back into the middle from a left-wing cross.

The Whitley Bay defence had a great game with Oakley formidable in the middle, but the forwards were magnificent.
