Manager Marc Nash was clearly thrilled with his team’s performance and highlighted the value of having a Reserve team to draw on. “It was the classic cup tie – I know there was a dramatic FA Cup game during Paddy’s reign a couple of years ago (against Matlock Town) but last night will come close and maybe because of the injury problems and the team full of youngsters it may eclipse it. Eight squad members were either current or former reserve players with another two injured. We are so fortunate to have that resource in the club.
I’m sure the players, the management and especially the fans went through all the emotions possible but if you’re talking value for money then these players are worth every penny spent.
We started brightly again but we couldn’t find the finishing touch like the last replay v Seaham. We dominated possession and had chances which is frustrating but also tells you that in time, with patience you can find a way. A poor goal to concede was disappointing but we responded great and turned the screw before half time but were unlucky to go in behind. We lost momentum after the break and we huffed and puffed a little with some sloppy passes putting us on the back foot. The crowd were understandably edgy but the players take all the credit for keeping their discipline and not panicking by just lumping the ball forward as is the temptation sometimes. Eventually we got into our stride and like a click of a switch we turned it on. Of course the breakthrough is crucial but we wore Penrith down to the point they looked demoralised and after Matty’s fantastic finish, it was no surprise we added a couple more. When we get into that zone it’s very hard to stop with so many exciting attacking players.
The players know they’ve sent the fans home absolutely buzzing and that’s the reason they play for this club and it’s plain to see their desire and team spirit out there on the pitch. They gave everything and have done the club proud. Hopefully they enjoy the taste of it all and can revel in more nights like that one.”
