Midfielder Matty Cornish was clearly delighted to score the crucial third goal against Billingham Synthonia just four minutes after coming off the bench on his 20th birthday. “It was great to get a goal, I was glad to get a few minutes.”
Describing the goal that sealed victory he explained “It was good work down the left by Kempster and I was hoping he’d just pull it back. It came towards me and I just had to get good contact on it. I got a little toe on it and it just seemed to go in the top corner, so yes, it was a perfect way to celebrate! Obviously at 2-0 you’re never 100% comfortable and just before I came on they (in the dugout) said ‘the game’s not won yet so if you can do anything to seal it that’s good.’ And obviously that’s what I did so it was spot on really!”
After coming off the bench to score twice in the FA Cup replay against Penrith and getting another one in this replay he joked “Hopefully we don’t need a replay next round but if necessary I’ll be ready!” Looking ahead to next month’s trip to Hull he added “I’m definitely looking forward to the next round, it should be a good day out. Hopefully we’ll bring the win back and celebrate on the way home.”
